Abstract:

The role of science in international agreements is increasingly being contested. One reason for this is the growing number of high profile trade disputes. Some stakeholders continue to defend science as an independent source of objective knowledge that applies across international boundaries. Others argue that values and interests shape science in practice. Important insights into this problem come from examining the ways in which international agreements and institutions currently deal with trade in genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
