Abstract:

The paper will discuss several central biological concepts--species, genes, genomes, and organisms of which philosophers have struggled, on the whole unsuccessfully, to provide satisfactory accounts.

Two central and connected explanations of this difficulty will be considered, the difficulty of abstracting objects from processes, and the philosophical heritage of mechanism.
