In debate at Manchester Science Festival

19.10.2010

Introduction

Senior research fellow will discuss artificial life.

Story

Dr Maureen O’Malley, Senior Research Fellow at Egenis, will join Professor Ron Weiss of Princeton University, a prominent scientist in the field of synthetic biology, to discuss ‘Artificial life: Promises and pitfalls’ at the Manchester Science Festival next week.

The recent creation of "artificial life" in a laboratory has highlighted the potential benefits - and the possible risks - of the emerging science of synthetic biology. In this discussion, Dr O’Malley and Professor Weiss will be joined by Professor Steve Yearley of the ESRC Genomics Forum. They will explore the scientific background to the story, before opening up the debate to consider the broader social, economic and ethical implications of biological engineering.

Manchester Science Festival takes place between 26-31 October. 'Artificial life: Promises and pitfalls', will be held at the John Dalton Building, Manchester Metropolitan University, on Tuesday 26 October from 6-8pm. The event is free but places must be reserved.

Visit the festival website for full programme and booking details.
