Doing Epidemiology: The case of Bisphenol A

In this talk I will discuss a study on which I worked last year. (Details are below, for those who may wish to look at it in advance.) The paper, which describes some potentially harmful consequences of a widely used chemical, was published in a high profile journal and attracted widespread media attention and responses from the chemical industry. I will present the paper as I would to an audience of epidemiologists or public health specialists and then go on to talk about the context and consequences of its production: how it came to be written, what a study of this type can and cannot achieve, and how the findings were presented in the mass media and elsewhere. I will discuss what a paper like this means in terms of the potential and limitations of observational epidemiology, and reflect on the rhetorical use of findings of this type in debates on the "precautionary principle" and on public health more broadly.
