Intervening in the brain: Cesagen response to consultation on neurotechnology

Researchers at Cesagen have provided a response to the Nuffield Council on Bioethics consultation on novel neurotechnologies.

A Working Party at the Nuffield Council on Bioethics are currently exploring the ethical, social and legal issues arising from the development and impact of neurotechnologies such as those that intervene in the brain to help treat diseases such as stroke, dementia, obesity and depression.

Cesagen researchers have written a comprehensive response to the consultation, which closed on the 23rd April. They take the position that attention should be paid to the way in which technologies and the associated issues are framed and by whom. They point out that this is not just a scientific or technological matter, but "involves cultural and sociological imaginations as well as artistic ones.....and should be a democratic societal and reflexive effort, involving collective public meanings, desires, needs and concerns."
