Dr. Michael Arribas-Ayllon and Dr. Nigel Williams debate ‘Personal Responsibility and Genomic Science’


On the 19th January 2010, Dr. Nigel Williams of the MRC Centre in Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics at Cardiff University and Dr. Michael Arribas-Ayllon of the Centre for the Economic and Social Aspects of Genomics at Cardiff University spoke at the Philosophy Café in The Gate Arts Centre, Cardiff. philosophy cafe 1

The topic of debate was ‘Personal Responsibility and Genomic Science’. This was the first in a programme of public engagement events that will be jointly organised by the two research council funded centres at Cardiff. After two erudite and illuminating presentations, the 70-strong audience broke up in to small groups to discuss the ethical, philosophical and social implications of developments in psychiatric genetics.

philosophy cafe 2Popular topics of discussion included: complexity in science, genetic testing, insurance and employability issues, classification and their consequences, stigma and personal responsibility.
